FAQs
1. Who can attend the Tango Festival?
We welcome dancers of all levels from beginners to professionals and both traditional and nuevo dancers will find their tastes catered.
2. What should I do if I am new to the Sheffield Tango community and don’t know anybody at the Festival?
You are not alone; Sheffield Tango Festival welcomes both new and return dancers from near and far (as far as the USA!) This year, Sheffield Tango Festival has nominated Tango Ambassadors who will be easily identifiable and can be approached at any time. Tango Ambassadors are friendly and experienced dancers who are there to help those who are new to dancing, new to the community or who want a supported introduction to the dance floor. They will ensure that you feel part of the community in no time.
3. Will the roles be balanced?
Yes, based on feedback from last year, Sheffield Tango Festival will prioritise role balance at the point of booking for both the workshops and milongas. However, please note that this may result in longer waiting lists for roles in high demand.
4. How does the Sheffield Tango Festival manage role rotation?
Sheffield Tango Festival has identified the growing trend in relation to role rotation and actively promotes and encourages it. Dual role dancers must complete the booking form accordingly and are encouraged to explore both roles during milongas to ensure that the role balance at the Festival can be managed appropriately.
5. Do I need a partner to attend?
No, you do not need a partner to attend. Many participants attend solo and, as the workshops and milongas encourage partner rotation, you will have the opportunity to dance with different people. It is however advisable to book with a partner where possible as we aim to role balance and therefore, too many single role bookings could mean a waiting list is enforced.
6. Can I bring friends or family who don’t dance?
Although almost all of the participants of the Festival are dancers, non-dancers could observe the milongas or attend the performances and enjoy the music, atmosphere and may find the additional activities (such as the Tango talk or vendor stalls) of interest. However, please notify the organisers of your intentions in advance so that individual cases can be considered and arrangements confirmed.
7. What is the refund policy?
Along with all the Sheffield Tango Festival Terms & Conditions, the refund policy can be found on the Primavera Tango Festival website under the link. Please read the Terms & Conditions carefully prior to booking.
8. Is photography or videography allowed?
Please note that the Sheffield Tango Festival employs official photographers to capture the special moments of the weekend. Please feel free to take photographs and videos for your own personal memories. We ask however, that you please respect the privacy of other attendees and check with the organisers before uploading any photos or videos to any social media.
9. Are there any activities outside of dancing?
We have several additional activities taking place during this year’s Sheffield Tango Festival, such as stalls selling beautiful Tango wear and elegant shoes. In addition, we have an Alexander Technique trained practitioner on site who will offer a workshop and/or private sessions to assist with connection, body mechanics and body awareness.
10. Where can I eat?
There are numerous restaurants and cafes to suit all tastes and budgets within walking distance in Broomhill or five minutes in the car to Ecclesall Road. If you stay at the Jonas Hotel you can cook or you can eat takeaway in our very own refreshment space created within the Festival Venue. Free hot and cold drinks and occasional snacks will be available there.
11. What else can I do locally if I have more time in the area?
This is a very green area of the city and the beautiful Botanical Gardens are just five minutes walk. You can also enjoy the lovely Endcliffe Park and even walk from here through into the stunning countryside of the Peak District.
12. Is security provided at the Festival?
Although the Front Desk can indicate where personal items may be left, please note that each participant is responsible for their own belongings and Sheffield Tango Festival takes no responsibility for any loss or damage. The site is secured by gates and a code (which shall be provided to the participants by email), however we ask participants to take reasonable precautions as the Sheffield Tango Festival is not liable for any personal/vehicular safety to the extent that it can be excluded by law. Please report any incidents to the Front Desk as soon as possible and they will endeavour to assist.
13. What should I do in case of emergency, accident or injury?
Please report any such incidents to the Front Desk as soon as possible. There will be a First Aider on site and basic medical assistance will be provided, or further arrangements made, at the Front Desk. Alternatively, please make contact with any member of the Sheffield Tango Festival Organiser Team, photos of whom can be seen above the Front Desk, and who will be circulating throughout the Festival. The team comprises Lucas Gastiarena, Melanie Jarman, Ann Blanchflower (Peaty), Julie Hall or Emma Hall.
